WiFi 7 FAQs

Quantum Fiber is the first internet service provider with a custom-built WiFi 7 certified device! Learn more about WiFi 7 below, from setting up 360 WiFi to WiFi 7 features, security and more.

WiFi 7 equipment and app upgrades

Exciting changes are here! With the introduction of WiFi 7 devices, we're bringing improved security and coverage to our 360 WiFi customers beginning from June through August 2024. Learn more about the new WiFi 7 pods, new app features, and more.

What's happening? We're excited to deliver the latest WiFi experience to our 360 WiFi customers. This means two key changes are coming:

  1. Customers using the older style of WiFi pods (WiFi 5) will be upgraded to WiFi 7 pods at no extra charge.
  2. All customers with 360 WiFi will begin using the Quantum Fiber app to manage their network, instead of the separate 360 WiFi app.

When will this happen? The 360 WiFi app and the WiFi 5 pods will no longer work as of August 31, 2024.

Why the change? The benefits of WiFi 7 over WiFi 5 and 6 include:

  • Up to 8x faster speeds: Wireless connection speeds for compatible devices up to 8 times faster
  • Better coverage: Up to 25% greater WiFi coverage
  • More devices: Supports over 100 devices streaming simultaneously
  • Lower latency: Reduced lag when streaming, using virtual or augmented reality, and cloud gaming
  • Works with all WiFi devices: WiFi 7 is future-ready, while remaining backwards compatible with devices on older WiFi standards

In January 2024, Quantum Fiber proudly announced becoming the first in the industry to offer Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7™ devices. If you received new WiFi 7 pods, it’s because your current WiFi setup (WiFi 5) needs an upgrade. This means newer technology with advanced features at no extra cost to you

If you received fewer pods than you have currently, it’s because with WiFi 7, most homes get superior whole-home coverage with just one or two WiFi pods. In fact, additional pods will cause interference and can actually hurt your overall WiFi performance. Less is more!

You'll need to do the following:

  • Set up your new pods soon! The WiFi 5 pods (hexagonal shape) will no longer work with our network as of August 31, 2024. The Quantum Fiber app will walk you through each step of setting up and connecting your new pods. You can also follow the instructions and video on our support page.
  • Once you have the new pods installed, you'll need to disconnect the old ones and ship them back to us—at no charge.
  • Uninstall the 360 WiFi app and use only the Quantum Fiber app to manage your network.

If you receive one wired pod (W1700K), it will be plugged in to the SmartNID so it must remain close to that device. If you receive an additional wireless pod (W1701K), follow these tips:

  • For a single-level home or business, place the wireless pod mid-way between the SmartNID + wired pod and the farthest room where you need a wireless connection.
  • For a multi-level home, place your wireless pod on a different level than the SmartNID + wired pod.

No, mixing pod types together will not work due to hardware and software compatibility. Once you've installed the WiFi 7 pods, you will not be able to use the older style WiFi 5 or 6 pods. Si lo deseas, return them to us using the free UPS returns site.

You may need to refresh your connection in the app before your pods appear. To do this, pull from the top of your screen to refresh the app or sign out and back in to the app to establish your network.

Features and benefits

WiFi 7 is is the latest standard of wireless technology. It delivers faster, more reliable, and more secure internet access than WiFi 6.

The top benefits of WiFi 7 include:

  • Up to 8X faster: Wireless connection speeds for capable devices* up to 8 times faster than WiFi 6.

  • Better coverage: Up to 25% greater WiFi coverage compared to WiFi 6.

  • More devices: Over 100 concurrent devices can stream simultaneously.

  • Lower latency: Less time to transmit data, meaning reduced lag when streaming, using virtual or augmented reality, and cloud gaming.

  • Works with all WiFi devices: WiFi 7 is future-forward, while remaining backwards compatible with devices on older WiFi standards.

* Smartphones and other devices must be WiFi 7 capable to see full speed potential. More of these compatible devices are expected to be released throughout 2024.

And, if you're looking for even more tech-y details, we've got you:

  •  Multi-Link Operation (MLO): Devices can send and receive data across different channels at the same time. This decreases lag and improves reliability compared to WiFi 6.

  • 4K QAM: Enables each WiFi signal to hold more data for faster speeds compared to 1K QAM with WiFi 6.

  • Increased load handling: With wider channels (320 GHz) twice the size of previous WiFi generations, more data can be packed into each transmission, making for significantly faster connections speeds.

  • Multi-RU puncturing (MRU): WiFi 7 devices can use previously unused parts of the high-speed channel to transmit more data, making it even faster than WiFi 6.

360 WiFi with WiFi7 features advanced network security. When all features are active, your network is protected from malicious websites, hackers, and infected files and attachments.

  • Anti-Virus – Protection against infected file attachments by scanning them for a virus prior to opening.

  • Malicious Website Filter – Protection against potentially risky websites that could infect a device with malware.

  • Intrusion Prevention System - Protection against hacking of devices connected to your network. This is particularly important for connected IOT devices (smart doorbells, WiFi-connected baby monitors, etc.)

The first pod will be connected directly to your SmartNID. Any additional pods should be evenly spaced between there and the farthest devices in your home or business space. In addition, it's best to have a clear line of sight to your WiFi pods, with no major barriers surrounding them, which can block or slow the signal. You'll be guided through ideal pod placement during setup.

Yes, it's easy to adjust your network if needed. Once you have 360 WiFi up and running, if your setup changes, you can add a pod to your service. Start by signing in to your Quantum Fiber account on the web to order another pod. Once it arrives, you'll use the Quantum Fiber app to connect the new pod to your existing WiFi network.

Performance and compatibility
