Test speed to this device

Use the speed-to-device test below to check the download and upload speed on the computer or mobile device you're using now.

Note: Only the speed-to-home test will roughly reflect your total plan bandwidth. To test overall speed to your home, use the Quantum Fiber app.

* Indicates minimum recommended bandwidth required for each device to perform this activity. Each device activity takes away from total available bandwidth.

** Higher bandwidth is recommended for very large files to reduce download times. For instance, some games can be 60 GB or more.

There are several factors that impact the real-world speeds you get at any given time on your devices.

Device speed: No matter how fast the internet service, devices have their own speed limits. Many devices will be slower than your core connection speed, especially when you're running at gigabit speeds. For example, some laptops only support 100 or 200 Mbps. You’ll see the best performance on devices made in the past two years.

Number of devices: All devices connected to your network share the finite amount of bandwidth. The beauty of super-high bandwidth plans is that sharing across several devices is less likely to impact device speed.

WiFi factors: Your wireless connection can greatly impact your speed. The farther away a device is from the nearest WiFi pod or router, the slower the real-time speed will be. Physical barriers like walls, floors and doors that stand in between will also cut signal strength. And WiFi networks that overlap yours can cause interference and reduce speeds as well.

You may hear these two terms used interchangeably, but they are a bit different:

  • Bandwidth is the amount of data transmitted over an internet connection per second.
  • Speed (or throughput) to the device is the rate at which content reaches any one device (tablet, laptop, smartphone, etc.) from the internet at any one moment.

Think about a water pipe that supplies water to a building. Bandwidth is the size of the pipe, which determines how much water can flow through the pipe in a second. The speed is how fast the water comes out of one tap when you turn it on.

Improve your speed

Depending on where you live, you may have a speed package of up to 200 Mbps, up to 500 Mbps, up to 940 Mbps, up to 1 Gbps, up to 3 Gbps or up to 8 Gbps. The speed-to-device test on this page will not reflect your total bandwidth, but rather the speed on your specific computer or mobile device. Depending on the type and age of device you're using, your speed-to-device result could be much lower than your plan speed.

The speed-to-device test on this page measures the speed on the mobile phone, tablet, or computer you're using now. This reflects only a portion of your overall bandwidth. The speeds you see from device to device will vary a lot, as they're impacted by factors like the type and age of your device, the number of devices connected to your network, your equipment, and WiFi signal interference.

On the other hand, the speed-to-home test in the Quantum Fiber app should be very close to your total plan bandwidth, as it reflects the signal directly from our fiber network to your SmartNID or modem. This number remains pretty steady most of the time.

The first thing to try if you're having a connection issue of any kind is to restart your SmartNID or modem. Restart manually or from the app. This will help clear the equipment's memory and refresh the connection.

  1. Clear a path between your nearest WiFi pod or router and your personal devices. Reduce physical blockage like heavy walls, floors, or appliances as much as possible.

  2. Move your 360 WiFi pods or gateway (modem/router) to reach areas of your home or business that are getting a weak signal.

  3.  Utiliza una wired (Ethernet) connection instead of WiFi for some high-bandwidth devices like a gaming system, work computer, or streaming TV.

  4. Depending on your plan, if you have a bandwidth-hungry device gobbling up your speed, you might consider disconnecting that device at certain times of day.

  5. Keep devices up to date. For the best WiFi speeds, use newer devices made within the last few years.

  6. Keep operating systems and browsers up to date and protected from malware that can bog things down.

Check total speed in the app

In the Quantum Fiber app, you can check both speed-to-device and speed-to-home with a quick tap. From the dashboard screen:

Option A: Tap Check your network to open the speed to your home screen. This should be close to your overall plan bandwidth.
